A Practical Guide to PCBA Prototyping
Prepare a complete manufacturing package and move through engineering review, quotation, production, testing and the build review.

Prepare the manufacturing package
A prototype build begins with clear requirements: application, quantity, board construction, assembly needs and the requested schedule. The article recommends preparing Gerber files, a BOM, placement coordinates and assembly drawings, together with relevant test expectations.
Review before quoting and building
Engineering review checks that the documentation is complete and consistent. Manufacturability checks can identify concerns around pads, spacing and package details. Resolving these findings before material preparation helps establish a clearer build scope.
Agree on the build and close the loop
The commercial review should clarify what the quote includes, including engineering preparation, materials, assembly and inspection. Production and testing then follow the agreed package. A build review captures issues and results so that the prototype can inform the next revision or the move toward volume production.
